In her latest video book report, Mary tells us about one of her favorite Billie B. Brown books
! These books are PERFECT first ‘chapter books’ for young readers!
Meet Billie B. Brown, brave, brilliant, bold, and bound to become your best friend! Brand-new readers will readily relate to this series of stand-alone, everyday adventures. Filled with true-to-life situations, warm family relationships, humorous illustrations and positive problem-solving, they’re taking the early reader scene by storm!
In The Beautiful Haircut, Billie is the best hairdresser ever! She likes to style her dolls’ hair, but real hairdressers cut hair too …
No more than 50 words per page! Word art or illustration on every second page!
Mary read us The Big Sister
tonight before bed! I absolutely am in love with this picture. Watching Mary read to Anna and me, and delighting
in doing so, was a precious memory that I know I’ll treasure forever. Reading is just so important, friends,
and I know you all already know that. I’m preachin’ to the choir for sure, but I still get so excited when I see my girls enjoying books! These first chapter books get Mary excited about reading
, and I just want to shout it from the rooftops!

to hear what Sally Rippin, the author, has to say about her books. I love this quote,
“Billie B. Brown [is] a fiesty tom-boy, who I’m hoping will provide a refreshing change for little girls (and parents) tired of princesses and fairies.”

Even though Mary is a great reader, she’s been scared of ‘chapter books’ for some reason. Perhaps they sound overwhelming? When I gave her a Hey, Jack book, she read it very quickly, like in 15 minutes! Then she read it again. Then she took it with us in the car and read it again! (Hey, Jack is the boy version of Billie B. It tells the story of her best friend, and they often have adventures together in the books.)
I said, “Mary, do you realize that you just read a (pause for effect) chapter book?” She looked surprised and then did a beautiful smile and turned away because she was embarrassed. Aww! Mission accomplished!
So, my mom bought her the Billie B. Brown series
right after that (thanks, Nana!). She’s been reading them for days
! These books have just been such a blessing, and I want to make sure you know about them. If you have a young reader who’s ready to move past the phonics readers (like Ted and Friends
) but may have some trepidation about big chapter books, Billie B.
and Hey, Jack
books to help make the transition!
